Now, if you run this with the Redhat supplied kernel (2.4.18-14), it works.
If you use a 2.4.19 kernel (2.4.19ctx-14 for example), rpm installs few
package and then wait forever, trapped in a pause() system call.

there is a known issue with the stock rpm on redhat 8.0 crashing. the
updated test rpm is somewhat better, but errors still occur and need the fix
outlined in the thread above.
