Have you installed/reboot the proper kernel. The set_ipv4root always succeed. I mean
you can do
/usr/sbin/chbind --ip 1.2.3.4 /bin/sh
and it will work. It is unrelated to the network device. The system call simply
copy the address whatever it is. It does not check if this address correspond
to a valid network interface at all (but if it does not match, the process
and childing bound to this address won't be able to use IP networking
at all).
